What does speech therapy look like for a 3 year old?

ExcelPath Clinical TeamCCC-SLP Reviewed

When most people hear "speech therapy" they picture a kid sitting at a desk repeating words. That is not what it looks like here. Especially not for a 3 year old.

It looks like play.

Our speech therapists use play to teach communication. Because that is how 3 year olds learn. They learn by doing, touching, playing, being silly.

A session might look like blowing bubbles. Every time one pops, the therapist says "pop." After a while, your child starts saying it too.

Or it might look like playing with a toy farm. The therapist picks up a cow and says "moo." Your child reaches for it. The therapist waits, giving your child a chance to try the word or the sound or even just a point. Then they hand it over with a big smile.

What does a speech therapist work on with a young child?

Making sounds and putting them together into words. Understanding simple instructions like "give me the ball." Using words, signs, or gestures to ask for things. Taking turns in simple back and forth interactions. Learning to point, wave, or use other body language. Starting to put two words together like "more milk" or "go car."

What if my child is not talking at all?

Many of the children we work with are not using words when they start. We meet your child where they are. If they are not talking yet, we start with the building blocks. Sounds, gestures, eye contact, and other ways to communicate.

Some children use picture cards or devices. There is no shame in that. Communication is communication.

How is speech therapy connected to ABA?

Your child’s speech therapist and BCBA work together. The speech therapist focuses on communication skills. The BCBA makes sure those skills are being practiced throughout the day, during ABA sessions, at meals, during transitions.

This is one of the biggest advantages of having everything in one building. The team does not just coexist. They collaborate.

How often?

Most children have speech therapy 1 to 2 times per week. Sessions are usually 30 to 60 minutes.
